\nThe Kansas City Chiefs have a decision to make if they want to keep quarterback Alex Smith around for the long haul. Acquired in a trade with San Francisco, Smith is entering the final year of his contract.<\/p>\n

“Well, there’s open communication between both parties. Now, I’m not in that business anymore — that’s (general manager) John Dorsey’s side of it — but there’s been open communication,” Chiefs head coach Andy Reid said on NFL Network’s NFL AM.<\/p>\n

Without Smith there is no clear cut favorite for starts on the Chiefs roster even as the team drafted Aaron Murray in the fifth round.<\/p>\n

“I’ve always believed that if there’s open communication, then normally good things happen. So, I’m sure something will get done. I can’t put a time frame on that, but I’m sure something will get done.”<\/p>\n

The Chiefs are in no rush to sign Smith to an extension. There does not figure to be a large number of teams lining up at the door to sign the 30-year-old next year. Any deal should get done at the price the Chiefs deem necessary.<\/p>\n

Smith is coming off a career season in 2013 that saw him set new highs with 3,313 yards passing, 23 touchdowns and just seven interceptions.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
