A free agent this off-season the 37-year-ol infielder has multiple suitors who appear willing to over pay.

The latest report about Scutaro comes from Buster Onley who says that the bidding on the infielder has reached three years and $24 million. San Francisco still appears to be the favorites to re-sign him.

That is not to say that the St. Louis Cardinals and New York Yankees are not bidding up the price.

In Scutaro’s most productive seasons of his career he barely appears to be the type of player who is worth $8 million a season. Over the last four seasons Scutaro has a .290/.354/.404 line with 37 home runs, 338 runs scored and 244 RBI.

Good numbers but it must also be considered that a those numbers came while Scutaro was 33, 34, 35 and 36. If the three length on a contract is correct his next deal will cover his age 37, 38 and 39 seasons. Its a common occurrence in the post steroid era of baseball, age will bring those numbers down.

While his defensive versatility will make Scutaro useful for any team his overall defensive numbers are nothing more then league average stats compiled by a nice guy.

I can not blame Scutaro for cashing in on his post season numbers I just do not understand how he is worth so much for so long going forward.

Scutaro made $17 million over the past three seasons, its hard to believe he will be as productive in the next three seasons.

UPDATE: Scutaro has re-signed with the Giants for three years and $20 million.
