Cardinals giving up on Greg Holland, calling up Dakota Hudson

The Cardinals are giving up on reliever Greg Holland after the righty posted a 7.92 ERA in 32 games

Signed to a $14 million deal, Holland joined the team late and never showed any of the form which saw him appear on the 2016 All-Star team while a member of the Rockies.

Holland figures to get another chance to hang around the majors after he is formally released.

With Holland off the roster, the Cardinals will call up their No. 4 prospect Dakota Hudson. The former first round pick now appears to begin his big league career as a relief pitcher though given his 2.50 ERA in 111 2/3 innings at Triple-A starts for the 23-year-old should come before too long.

In addition to Holland, Tyler Lyons has also been designated for assignment. Lyons had a 8.64 ERA this season in 27 games but had a strong 2017 season and remains under team control though 2020 leaving open the chance someone claims him on waivers or via trade.

In other Cardinals news Brett Cecil was place don the 10-day DL.

With Lyons and Cecil both out of the picture the Cardinals also recalled LIke Weaver and Daniel Poncedeleon to the big league club.
