The Cincinnati Reds will give slumping outfielder Jay Bruce the day off Saturday in their schedule game against the Chicago Cubs.

On the season Bruce is hitting just .164/.261/.328 with three home runs and nine RBI.

Getting the start in the place of Bruce will be Brandon Boesch. The Cubs will start right-hander Jake Arrieta.

Last season Bruce topped 100 RBI for the first time and hit 30 or more home runs for the third straight year.

Reds release Dan Johnson

The Reds have also released veteran Dan Johnson.

Johnson, 35, failed to earn a spot on the bench for the Houston Astros this spring and later signed on to a minor league deal with the Reds. He was just 2-for-29 in his nine games with Triple-A Louisville.

Despite an ability to hit at the minor league level, Johnson has never been able to stick as a regular at the big league level. In 431 career games spread across nine seasons he owns a career .236/.337/.409 line with 57 home runs and 201 RBI.
