Rafael Furcal will play in his first big league game since 2012.

Furcal, 36, missed the entire 2013 season after undergoing Tommy John surgery and has been hobbled by groin and hamstring injuries this year.

He will play second base and bat leadoff for the Marlins on Friday night against the Pittsburgh Pirates who will have Jeff Locke on the mound.

Furcal was given a one-year deal worth $3.5 million by the Marlins.

In 2012 Furcal hit .264/.325/.346 with five home runs, 69 runs scored and 12 stolen bases in 121 games with the St. Louis Cardinals.

In order to clear a spot for him on the 40-man roster the Marlins placed Angel Sanchez on waivers, he has since been claimed by the Tampa Bay Rays.
