The Kansas City Royals were likely to non-tender catcher George Kottaras. On Thursday the team designated him for assignment, moving him off the roster and making him a free agent.
After signing Jason Vargas to a four-year deal earlier in the day the Royals needed a spot on their 40-man roster.e
Kottaras hit just .180/.349/.370 in 126 plate appearances. Now at the age of 3o it appears unlikely that Kottaras will never be more than a back-up of minor league depth.
