Gerrit Cole improved to 6-5 on the season as the Pittsburgh Pirates defeated the Arizona Diamondbacks on Friday night.

Cole struck out five and walked two while allowing two runs over six innings of work.

In the bottom of the third the Pirates jumped out to a 2-0 lead when Pedro Alvarez singeled to center scoring Neil Walker and Andrew McCutchen.

Back to back singles by Arizona’s Martin Prado and Paul Goldschmidt in the top of the fourth evened the score in the fourth but the Pirates would respond in the fifth.

Walked doubled in Starling Marte and McCuthen later plated him with a single of his own. Jose Tabata would hit a two run home run in the eighth inning to put the game out of reach.

On the season Cole has a 3.88 ERA and a 1.14 WHIP and will pitch in San Diego next week.
