The NASCAR O’Reilly Auto Parts Series delivered a masterclass in momentum shifts and late-race heroics this weekend, culminating in a milestone win for veteran Justin Allgaier. Taking the checkered flag by a narrow margin of 0.578 seconds over Brandon Jones, Allgaier secured his 30th career win. The victory is a significant statistical marker, moving him into a tie with Joey Logano for the seventh-most wins in the history of the series.
For much of the afternoon, it appeared the story of the race would belong to Kyle Larson. Starting from the pole in the No. 88 HendrickCars.com Chevrolet, Larson was the definition of dominant. By the halfway point at lap 67, Larson had led every single lap, maintaining a perfect average running position of 1.0. His early-race speed was unmatched, recording a blistering fastest lap of 160.874 mph on just the second circuit of the 147-lap event.
However, the “Lady in Black” began to show her teeth as the race progressed. The first major shake-up occurred on lap 96 when Brandon Jones managed to wrestle the lead away from Larson following a series of pit stops. While Larson had led 94 of the first 96 laps, the tide began to turn as the No. 20 Toyota of Jones found its long-run rhythm. Jones, who started eighth, utilized a lightning-fast 13.96-second four-tire service to position himself at the front of the pack.
The intensity ramped up on lap 123 when chaos erupted mid-pack. Kyle Sieg and Dean Thompson made contact off Turn 2, triggering a multi-car accident that collected Austin Hill, Alex Labbe, and Lavar Scott. This third caution period of the day proved to be the turning point for the leaders. Under the yellow flag, the field headed to pit road for their final service. Brandon Jones’ crew delivered once again, getting him out first, while Larson’s stop saw him shuffle back to fifth position.
When the green flag flew for the final restart at lap 133, it became a high-stakes duel between Brandon Jones and Justin Allgaier. The two veterans roared side-by-side into the first turn, but Allgaier utilized the outside line to find a massive run off Turn 2, clearing Jones for the lead. Behind them, young guns like Corey Day and Carson Kvapil battled fiercely with Cup regulars Kyle Larson and Christopher Bell, but Allgaier began to slowly inch away, stretching his lead to nearly 0.8 seconds with 11 laps to go.
In the closing stages, the tension was palpable as Carson Kvapil challenged Larson for fourth, while Allgaier managed his tires and the gap to the charging Brandon Jones. Despite Jones’ best efforts to close the distance, Allgaier’s No. 7 BRANDT Chevrolet remained untouchable. Crossing the line to a roar from the crowd, Allgaier solidified his place among the legends of the sport, proving that even against a dominant Larson, persistence and late-race execution are the keys to Darlington’s Victory Lane.
