In a race defined by long green-flag runs and a masterful recovery from pit road errors, Denny Hamlin piloted his No. 11 Yahoo! Toyota to a narrow victory at the finish line, holding off a late-charging Chase Elliott by a mere 0.502 seconds. The 267-lap contest featured a high-speed chess match between Toyota’s raw pace and Chevrolet’s long-run consistency, with Hamlin leading a race-high 120 laps to secure the win.
The Early Dominance of Joe Gibbs Racing
The afternoon began with a statement of intent from Joe Gibbs Racing (JGR). Pole-sitter Christopher Bell led the opening two circuits before Hamlin flexed his muscle, surging to the front on Lap 8 and clocking the fastest lap of the race at over 183 mph. The JGR stable dominated the first quarter of the event, with Hamlin, Bell, and Ty Gibbs frequently occupying the top three spots.
However, the team’s bid for a perfect day nearly unraveled during the first cycle of caution pit stops around Lap 84. In a rare lapse of discipline, both Hamlin and Ty Gibbs were tagged for speeding on pit road entry. The penalties mired the race’s fastest cars deep in the field, opening the door for Kyle Larson and William Byron to take control of the middle stages.
Hendrick Motorsports Assumes Control
With the JGR leaders fighting through traffic, Hendrick Motorsports teammates Kyle Larson and William Byron turned the race into a duel of the “H’s.” Larson was particularly dominant during the second stage, maintaining an average running position of 3.05 and leading 58 laps. The battle intensified on Lap 160 when Byron and Larson made slight contact off Turn 4; Byron used the momentum to snatch the lead and eventually claim the Stage 2 victory.
As the race entered its final 100 laps, the leaderboard became a revolving door of elite talent. The event saw 21 lead changes among nine different drivers, including a mid-race charge by Joey Logano, who rose from a 21st-place starting spot to lead during a green-flag pit cycle.
The Final Charge and Victory Lane
The complexion of the race shifted for the final time following a caution on Lap 211 triggered by a spin from rookie Connor Zilisch. Christopher Bell won the race off pit road, but Hamlin—having methodically worked his way back to the front after his earlier penalty—cleared Bell for the lead on the Lap 219 restart.
While Hamlin attempted to check out, opening a 1.6-second gap, Chase Elliott began a frantic pursuit in the closing 25 laps. Elliott, who started 15th, slashed Hamlin’s lead down to half a second as the white flag waved. Despite the pressure and the obstacles of lapped traffic, Hamlin held his line to take the checkered flag.
The final top five reflected a hard-fought day for the field’s heavy hitters:
-
1st: Denny Hamlin (Toyota)
-
2nd: Chase Elliott (Chevrolet)
-
3rd: William Byron (Chevrolet)
-
4th: Christopher Bell (Toyota)
-
5th: Ty Gibbs (Toyota)
The resilience of the JGR Toyotas was the story of the day; despite three of their cars suffering speeding penalties earlier in the afternoon, Hamlin, Gibbs, and Chase Briscoe (who finished 8th) all managed to salvage top-ten finishes.
