Legacy Motor Club majority owner Jimmie Johnson revealed during Thursday’s episode of “The Morning Drive” on SiriusXM NASCAR Radio that the organization is officially set to grow. The team will expand to a three-car stable starting with the 2027 Cup Series season, marking a significant milestone in the evolution of the club since Johnson took majority ownership in January 2025.
Currently, Legacy Motor Club operates two full-time chartered entries: the No. 42 driven by John Hunter Nemechek and the No. 43 piloted by Erik Jones. The team has undergone a massive transformation in recent years, rebranding in 2023 from its previous identities as Richard Petty Motorsports and Petty GMS Motorsports. This latest move to add a third car represents a commitment to scaling the operation to compete with the sport’s elite multi-car powerhouses.
During his radio appearance, Johnson expressed immense confidence in the expansion, telling co-hosts Mike Bagley and Pete Pistone that there is “without question” a third car on the grid for 2027. He emphasized that the growth is not just about adding a vehicle, but about strengthening the entire organization. By increasing their footprint, Johnson believes the team will be better positioned to recruit top-tier talent and build a more robust workforce, ultimately using the additional data and resources to “speed up the process” of finding victory lane.
While the announcement has sparked immediate speculation throughout the garage, Johnson did not provide specific details regarding a driver, car number, or sponsorship for the new entry. For now, the focus remains on the current roster as Legacy Motor Club continues to chase its first win under the new brand. Heading into Sunday’s race at Las Vegas Motor Speedway, Nemechek sits 22nd in the standings, while Jones sits 28th but carries momentum from a strong top-10 finish at Phoenix Raceway last weekend.
