After a strong rookie season resulted in a Rookie of the Year award, Miami Marlins pitcher Jose Fernandez is setting his sights higher in 2014.
Fernandez, 21, finished last season with a 2.19 ERA. It’s hard to imagine doing better than that but the right hander says his goal is a 1.95 ERA this season.
“I know it will be hard,” Fernandez said, via Marlins.com. “I like it hard. I don’t like easy. … But I’m going to try. It’s my goal.”
Fernandez realizes posting an ERA below 2.00 is no easy task. Just 13 pitchers have done so since 168.
“I know, I know,” Fernandez said. “You can’t have too many bad innings. But I expect to pitch a lot of good innings. I’m not saying I’m going to get 1.95. But that is my goal. It’s what I want to do.”
