Tyler Reddick continued his blistering start to the 2026 NASCAR Cup Series season on Sunday, navigating a minefield of mechanical gremlins and on-track incidents to capture the Goodyear 400 at Darlington Raceway. Despite early electrical scares and pit road penalties that sent him to the back of the pack, Reddick’s No. 45 Toyota proved to be the class of the field when it mattered most. The victory marks Reddick’s fourth win in just six races this season—a staggering stretch of dominance that began with three consecutive trips to Victory Lane to open the year.
The afternoon at the track “Too Tough to Tame” initially appeared to belong to Brad Keselowski. The 2012 champion was in vintage form, sweeping both Stage 1 and Stage 2 while leading a race-high 142 of the 293 laps. Keselowski’s RFK Racing Fords showed incredible long-run speed, with teammates Chris Buescher and Ryan Preece often flanking him at the front of the field. However, the final green-flag stretch saw Reddick storm back into contention, ultimately passing Keselowski on Lap 266 and leading the final 28 circuits to secure the checkered flag.
Reddick’s path to the win was anything but linear. Troubles began as early as Lap 2 when he reported voltage issues, likely caused by a hard hit over a bump in Turn 2. The 23XI Racing team was forced into survival mode, instructing Reddick to shut off cooling aids to preserve engine power. A slow 16-second pit stop during Stage 1 further hampered his progress, and a battery swap performed while pit road was closed resulted in a tail-of-the-field penalty for the start of Stage 2. Yet, Reddick’s resilience allowed him to methodically carve through traffic.
The race’s turning point occurred at Lap 240 during a high-stakes sequence involving Reddick and Chris Buescher. As Keselowski rocketed past Buescher for the lead, Buescher made a sudden move toward pit road. Reddick, tucked closely behind, was caught off guard by the deceleration and clipped the back of the No. 17 Ford. The contact sent Buescher sliding into the Turn 3 SAFER barrier. While Buescher miraculously saved the car to finish inside the top 10, the incident cleared the way for Reddick to focus his sights solely on Keselowski for the win.
Behind the leaders, the day was defined by a mix of stellar recoveries and heartbreaking collapses. Ryan Blaney finished a strong third, a testament to his perseverance after a disastrous pit stop where his crew failed to tighten his left-side tires. Blaney was forced to stop in teammate Austin Cindric’s pit box to secure the wheels, an infraction that sent the 2023 champion to the rear. Similarly, Bubba Wallace saw a promising run evaporate after a pit road error led to his involvement in a three-car wreck with Erik Jones and Denny Hamlin early in Stage 2.
The closing laps provided one final sting for Kyle Larson, who had been a fixture in the top five for much of the afternoon. Running 11th with just 10 laps to go, Larson suffered a late-race mechanical issue that plummeted him to a 32nd-place finish. His misfortune allowed young guns like Carson Hocevar and Ty Gibbs to solidify impressive top-10 performances, finishing fourth and sixth, respectively, alongside veterans like Daniel Suárez and William Byron.
Ultimately, the story of the Goodyear 400 was Reddick’s ability to “tame” the track despite a mounting list of excuses to fail. By overcoming a failing alternator, a battery swap, and a mid-race collision, the 23XI driver has firmly established himself as the man to beat in 2026. As the series moves forward, the rest of the garage is left wondering what it will take to slow down the No. 45 team’s historic momentum.
