Corey Heim steals win from Ross Chastain on final lap in Darlington Truck Race

In a race that perfectly encapsulated why Darlington Raceway is nicknamed “Too Tough to Tame,” Corey Heim proved he had the grit to conquer the “Lady in Black.” Following a chaotic series of late-race restarts and a dramatic overtime surge, Heim executed a masterclass in precision, diving under Cup Series veteran Ross Chastain in the final corners to secure a victory by a razor-thin margin of 0.145 seconds. The win capped off a grueling 157-lap battle that featured 14 lead changes among eight different drivers, proving that at Darlington, track position is a temporary luxury and survival is the ultimate strategy.

The afternoon began with pole-setter Kaden Honeycutt asserting his dominance early. Driving the No. 11 Safelite Toyota, Honeycutt led the first five laps and remained the gold standard for much of the event, ultimately leading a race-high 58 laps. However, the abrasive Darlington surface began to take its toll as the race progressed. While Honeycutt captured the Stage 2 win, the field behind him remained restless, with Christian Eckes—who started a distant 16th—methodically slicing through traffic to claim the Stage 1 victory and signal that the Toyotas would have stiff competition from the Chevrolets.

As the laps wound down, the attrition rate skyrocketed. A significant turning point occurred on Lap 121 when Layne Riggs and Ty Majeski made contact while battling for fifth, triggering a multi-truck incident in Turn 1. The tension peaked again on Lap 144 when Carson Hocevar, who appeared to have the truck to beat in the closing stages, brushed the Turn 1 wall and spun. The resulting caution flag handed the lead to Ross Chastain and set the stage for a high-stakes overtime finish that would test the nerves of every driver remaining on the lead lap.

The initial overtime restart at Lap 150 was marred by a massive “stack-up” that eliminated several contenders. Tyler Ankrum slowed entering Turn 1 and struck the wall, triggering a chain reaction that damaged the trucks of Corey LaJoie, Stewart Friesen, and Justin Haley. Amidst the smoke and debris, Chastain maintained his composure on the inside lane, clearing the field to take the white flag. It appeared the “Melon Man” was destined for Gatorade Victory Lane, but Heim, lurking in second, had other plans for the final circuit.

On the definitive final lap, Heim showed remarkable veteran poise. After shadowing Chastain through the first two turns, Heim found the opening he needed entering Turn 3. He sent his No. 5 Frontline Enterprises Toyota deep into the corner, sliding underneath Chastain’s No. 45 Chevrolet to seize the lead. Heim powered off the final turn, maintaining his momentum to thwart Chastain’s counter-attack at the stripe. It was a clinical finish for a driver who maintained an impressive 3.92 average running position throughout the entire afternoon.

Statistically, Heim’s performance was a model of consistency. He spent 141 laps in the top five and 154 laps in the top 10, never allowing the leaders to escape his sights. His pit crew also played a pivotal role, executing three efficient stops that kept him in the hunt during the flurry of late-race cautions. Behind the lead duo, Christian Eckes completed his impressive charge from the back of the pack to finish third, while Honeycutt and Riggs rounded out the top five after a day of intense door-to-door combat.

With nine cautions for 47 laps, the race was a reminder of how quickly “The Track Too Tough to Tame” can end a driver’s day. For Corey Heim, however, the afternoon was a statement of intent. By besting one of the Cup Series’ most aggressive drivers in a head-to-head sprint, Heim solidified his status as the man to beat in the Truck Series. As the teams pack up and head to the next stop on the schedule, the garage area will undoubtedly be buzzing about the daring Turn 3 dive that defined the Darlington thriller.
