Mercedes Eyeing Verstappen, But Russell Talks Unaffected, Says Wolff

Mercedes team principal Toto Wolff has confirmed the team is keeping an eye on Max Verstappen’s future but insists this has no impact on ongoing contract discussions with current driver George Russell.

Speculation ramped up after Russell hinted that Mercedes’ pursuit of Verstappen might be slowing talks about his own contract extension for 2026. Russell’s current deal ends this year, while Verstappen is under contract with Red Bull until 2028. However, performance clauses could open the door for an earlier exit.

“There is no delay in George’s contract,” Wolff told Sky Sports. “We’ve known each other for a long time, and the timing has been clear. But as team principal, it’s natural to explore what a four-time world champion might do in the future.”

Wolff emphasized that Russell is fully aware of Mercedes’ interest in Verstappen and said transparency is key. “There’s no secrecy,” he added. “We’re not actively trying to sign Max now—it’s not at that stage.”

Asked if Verstappen could join in 2026, Wolff said discussions are still informal and private. Meanwhile, Verstappen declined to address the rumors directly, saying his focus remains on driving and performance.

Wolff praised Russell, saying he has met all expectations despite not having a championship-winning car. “He doesn’t need to prove anything,” he said. “When the car is good, he wins races.”

As for a potential Verstappen–Russell pairing, Wolff said it’s possible but acknowledged the challenges of managing two top-tier drivers.
