Marcus Mariota Re-Signs with Washington Commanders on One-Year Deal

Veteran quarterback Marcus Mariota is set to return to the Washington Commanders for the 2025 season after agreeing to a one-year, $8 million contract, a source told ESPN’s Adam Schefter.

Mariota, 31, played a crucial role for the Commanders last season, primarily serving as the backup to rookie quarterback Jayden Daniels. Throughout the season, both Daniels and the coaching staff consistently praised Mariota for his leadership and mentorship. However, Mariota’s contributions extended beyond the locker room, as he stepped up to lead Washington to two key victories when Daniels was sidelined with an injury.

One of Mariota’s standout performances came in Week 7 against the Tennessee Titans. After Daniels exited early, Mariota took control and delivered an impressive showing, completing 18 of 23 passes for 205 yards and two touchdowns in a commanding 40-7 victory.

In the regular-season finale, Mariota once again proved his value. Entering the game at halftime against the Dallas Cowboys, he orchestrated a remarkable comeback, leading the Commanders to a 23-19 win. He completed 15 of 18 passes for 161 yards and two touchdowns, including a dramatic game-winning 5-yard touchdown pass to Terry McLaurin with just two seconds remaining. Mariota also added a rushing touchdown in the victory.

Originally the second overall pick in the 2015 NFL Draft, Mariota won the Heisman Trophy in 2014 before spending five seasons as the starter for the Tennessee Titans. Following his tenure in Tennessee, he transitioned into a backup role, spending time with the Las Vegas Raiders (2020-21), Atlanta Falcons (2022), and Philadelphia Eagles (2023) before joining Washington last season.

Over the course of his career, Mariota has played in 93 games, starting 74. He has accumulated 16,184 passing yards, 97 touchdowns, and 55 interceptions. Additionally, he has showcased his mobility with 2,156 rushing yards and 18 touchdowns.

With Mariota’s return, the Commanders retain a reliable and experienced veteran presence behind Daniels as they look to build upon last season’s progress. His leadership, combined with his ability to step in when needed, makes him a valuable asset for Washington heading into 2025.
