Sam Mayer wins Xfinity Series race at Homestead, Contender Boats 300 Results

Sam Mayer won Saturday’s Contender Boats 300 at Homestead-Miami Speedway.

Cole Custer began the second of three Round of 8 races for the Xfinity Series on the pole and would win the first stage of the race. The first caution for an on track incident came on lap 69 when Dawson Cram lost a tire. Under caution Derek Kraus would take tires and claim the second stage win.

Chandler Smith would see his championship hopes take a hit on the start for stage three after Brandon Jones came down on Kraus who would make contact with Smith. Brett Moffitt would also take damage in the incident. Justin Allgaier would have to pit due to a loose wheel.

Custer would get into the wall causing his right front tire to go down. That would result in Custer having to drive the length of the track on a flat seeing himself go from above the cutline to below despite picking up 18 points in the first two stages. Custer’s misfortune would give Sam Mayer the lead. Worse for Custer would be a penalty for too many men over the wall. Allgaier would pit for tires on lap 154 while a caution would come out on lap 165 for a loose tire.

While everyone else came for tires, Sheldon Creed and Kraus both opted to stay out and gamble on a late caution. A caution would come on the restart as Josh Berry got into the wall following some help from Dale Earnhardt Jr. but by that point Creed had already fallen though the pack.

In the closing laps Riley Herbst would get within half a second of Mayer but would come up just short of his second win.

The win is the fourth in the career of Mayer and his first on an oval.

In his last Xfinity Series start of the season Earnhardt finished fifth in his No. 88 Chevrolet.
