Hunter McElrea won the first of two Indy NXT races at WeaterTech Raceway Laguna Seca on Saturday.
Christian Rasmussen began the day on the pole as he eyes the series championship but it was Hunter McElrea who would begin to put distance between himself and the field early.
Louis Foster would crash on lap 18 while running sixth ending his day. Kiko Porto would go off the track on the restart bringing out the second full course caution. Jacob Abel would be given a drive though penalty for avoidable contact for the incident with Foster earlier in the race.
The third caution came out with eight laps to go for debris erasing McElrea’s lead that had already grown to more than two seconds. The final caution came out with two to go as Nolan Siegel and Jamie Chadwick got together resulting int he race being finished under caution.
While McElrea is technically alive for the championship, once Rasmussen starts the race he will lock in the championship on Sunday.
The final Indy NXT race of the season takes place Sunday at 2:30 pm ET.
