Harrison Burton still waiting on 2024 plans

#21: Harrison Burton, Wood Brothers Racing, Motorcraft/DEX Imaging Ford Mustang

Prior to the NASCAR Cup Series playoff opener at Darlington Raceway a crew chief swap took place between the No. 2 Team Penske and the No. 21 Wood Brothers entries.

Team Penske announced that “Effective immediately for 2023 & 2024, Brian Wilson will serve as CC for Austin Cindric and the No. 2 Team Penske Ford Mustang. Jeremy Bullins will serve as the CC for Harrison Burton and the No. 21 Wood Brothers Ford Mustang.”

Of course while that could be seen as a positive thing for the chances of Harrison Burton remaining with the Wood Brothers beyond this season the driver could not speak with any degree of certainty regarding his 2024 plans in an interview with Frontstretch.

“Yeah, we’ll see, it’s been ongoing,” Burton said. “I think a lot of it depends on how we run, right?” Burton said to Frontstretch.

“The swap is a good sign of that commitment to improve together. We’ll see, but luckily for me, I stay out of those conversations. I’m able to just drive, and I’ve got a great group of people around me that help with all of that, and I can just drive a race car.”

Burton won four races in the Xfinity Series during the 2020 season before going winless the following season and then making the jump to the Cup Series in 2022. Since joining the Wood Brothers the 22-year-old has a lone top-five (Indianapolis 2022) and four top-ten finishes. After finishing 27th in the driver standings a season ago Burton currently sits 31st while his average finish has dropped from 22.8 to 24.2 in his second full season.
