Josef Newgarden was the fastest in the NTT IndyCar’s practice session at Iowa Speedway.
The driver of the No. 2 posted a lap of 176.428 around the 0.875-mile oval to best, his Team Penske teammate, Scott McLaughlin.
Newgarden was the winner of the first race at Iowa last season. The winner of the second race, Pato O’Ward was fifth fastest.
Cooler temps compared the last year resulted in drivers posting faster speeds in the opening session.
On Saturday the IndyCar Series will qualify at 9:30 am ET before running their first of two races of the weekend later in the day at 3:00 pm ET. The second IndyCar race will take place on Sunday at 2:00 pm ET.
