Chase Briscoe given big penalty after Charlotte R&D

A counterfeit part has led to a big penalty for Chase Briscoe and the No. 14 Stewart Haas Racing team.

Briscoe and the team have been penalized 120 points and 25 playoff points due to a counterfeit engine NACA duct according to NASCAR senior vice president of competition Elton Sawyer.

The team has accepted the penalty and will not appeal it after Briscoe’s car was one of two taken to the R&D Center for additional tear down following Monday’s running of the Coca-Cola 600.

With the penalty Briscoe falls from 17th in the point standings to 31st and finds himself in a must win situation with 12 races left in NASCAR’s regular season.

In addition to the points penalty, crew chief John Klausmeir has been fined $250,000 points and suspended for six races.

“We had a quality control lapse and a part that never should’ve been on a car going to the racetrack ended up on the No. 14 car at Charlotte,” said Greg Zipadelli in a statement from the team. “We accept NASCAR’s decision and will not appeal.”

The penalty to Briscoe comes one day after NASCAR suspended Chase Elliott for this weekends race at World Wide Technology Raceway.
