Ryan Blaney survives caution filled Coca-Cola 600, Charlotte Results

Rain canceled qualifying for the first time in 64 years of the Coca-Cola 600 giving William Byron the pole. After the competition caution Ryan Blaney would move to the front of the field.

Byron would finish the first stage ahead of a hard charging Christopher Bell and Blaney. In the second stage Bell would get the lead but lose it during green flag pit stops to Tyler Reddick. With rain on the track the red flag was shown on lap 158.

When the race resumed after a 30 minute break, Jimmie Johnson would spin bringing out a caution. Kyle Busch would spin on lap 176 with Daniel Suarez making contact with him after the spin. The next caution came out shortly after the restart when Denny Hamlin and Chase Elliott made contact. Elliott then appeared to retaliate by wrecking both Hamlin and himself.

BJ McLeod would spin as the second stage ended. Brad Keselowski would have to pit 18 laps into the third stage for a loose tire. He was running fifth at the time. Christopher Bell would spin on lap 232 bringing out another caution. Keselowski and Todd Gilliland would bring out the next caution with Blaney retaking the lead after the race went green enroute to winning the third stage.

As Byron’s crew continued to get him off pit road first, Blaney would show he had a strong car on short runs retaking the lead. At lap 344 Michael McDowell lost a tire bringing out a yellow. Byron would again be the first off pit road but a bad stop by Blaney would take him off the front row. Caution fell again on lap 358 after Tyler Reddick and Kevin Harvick made contact. Zane Smith would stay out on old tires but was quickly passed on the restart by Byron as AJ Allmendinger got lose and made slight contact with Joey Logano to bring out the yellow again. The next caution came out when Austin Cindric went around after the restart.

After the final restart Blaney would begin to put distance between him and Byron scoring the eighth win of his career. Blaney’s last win was 59 races ago at Daytona in 2021. With Blaney’s win it marks the first time team owner Roger Penske has won both the Indy 500 and Coca-Cola 600 in the same weekend.
