Daniel Suarez running Quaker State scheme honoring Ricky Rudd at Darlington

Trackhouse Racing driver Daniel Suarez will run a scheme honoring Ricky Rudd at the upcoming throwback race at Darlington Raceway.

The No. 99 Chevrolet Camaro that Suarez will drive will have one of Rudd’s former sponsors, Quaker State, appearing on it while the number 99 is in the same font of Rudd’s former No. 26 Buick from the 1988 season.

Rudd finished the 1988 season 11th in the driver standings after scoring a win at Watkins Glen for King Racing which was owned by NHRA drag racing driver Kenny Bernstein. Larry McReynolds served as Rudd’s crew chief that season.

“I watched a video of Ricky’s career the other day and it’s obvious that he was a great driver and one tough man,” said Suárez who added that his team selected the paint scheme based on the relationship it has with Quaker State and the desire to honor Rudd who still maintains a large fan base.

“We hope this paint scheme reminds the older generation of fans of happy times watching Ricky Rudd race and teaches the younger generation about his accomplishments.”

Quaker State appeared on Suarez’s car for the first time this season at Richmond Raceway. The sponsor will appear again on the No. 99 at the July 9 race at Atlanta Motor Speedway.

The Southern 500 race, which will feature this scheme, will take place May 14 with coverage beginning at 3 pm ET on Fox Sports 1.
