Kyle Larson won Sunday’s running of the Toyota Owners 400 at Richmond Raceway.
Alex Bowman began the race on the pole after the field was set by the rule book as rain cancelled qualifying. A competition caution came out on lap 30. Ross Chastain would take the lead following pitstops as Ricky Stenhouse Jr. went behind the wall. The second yellow flag would come out on lap 45 after Denny Hamlin spun JJ Yeley.
William Byron would win the first stage of the race. Josh Berry would spin on lap 95 to bring out the fourth caution after contact from Ryan Blaney.
During green flag pit stops Blaney would get a penalty after leaving the pits with the wedge wrench still in the car. In the third stage Hamlin would lose the lead after an issue on pit road during green flag stops when his crew had to jack the car back up on the right side to make sure the right front tire was on.
Truex would try to pull away from the field as the race returned to green with 89 laps to go. More cautions would follow with Byron being turned by Christopher Bell with 21 laps to go. As Larson clicked away laps up front Truex on older tires was no match for the rest of the field and fell back.
The win is the first of the season for Larson and his 14th since joining Hendrick Motorsports. Larson’s paint scheme was his normal No. 5 Hendrick Motorsports paint scheme which was the same driven by Ricky Hendrick, the late son of his car owner. Sunday would have been the 43rd birthday of Ricky Hendrick.
