Figuring what to make of Ryan Newman’s first top-10

Ryan Newman finished inside the top ten for the first time in 2019 at Bristol.

Newman needed eight races to record his first top ten. A year ago he managed nine across 36 races. One a threat for the pole on a weekly basis the “Rocketman” has not had once since London in 2013.

This year Newman moves over to the Roush Fenway Racing No. 6 Ford Mustang. Seen largely as a lateral move from the No. 31 Chevrolet Camaro of Richard Childress Racing, expectations of Newman have been low by fans even as RFR has touted their drivers as competitive.

In Sunday’s Food City 500 no one would say Newman had a race winning car but he did have a car which ran inside the top ten and even top five for much of the race. After an 11th at Texas the ninth place finish at Bristol is now making Newman someone those who play fantasy sports would consider. The question now is whether or not he continues this and whether or not RFR gets Newman or teammate Ricky Stenhouse Jr. into victory lane in 2019.
