William Byron claims Daytona 500 pole, qualifying results

On the pole for the 61st running of The Great American Race will be William Byron in the No. 24 Axalta Chevrolet. By posting the fastest time in qualifying, Byron, ensures himself of being on the pole for the season opener at Daytona International Speedway.

Joining him on the front row will be teammate Alex Bowman in the No. 88 Nationwide Chevrolet. Each driver will start first in their respective Duel race on Thursday where the rest of the starting lineup for the Daytona 500 will be set. Teammates Jimmie Johnson and Case Elliott were third and fourth.

Based on their qualifying speeds both Tyler Reddick and Casey Mears have locked themselves into the Daytona 500. Brendan Gaughan, Joey Gase, Ryan Truex and Parker Kligerman will compete in the duels for the final two spots of cars not locked into the race.

The first Duel race on Thursday is set to take place at 7 pm ET. At 8:45 pm ET the second Duel race is set to take place. These races are 60 laps or 150 miles.

Alex Bowman took the pole in the Daytona 500 last season, he qualified second. Race winner Austin Dillon was the 10th fastest qualifier.

Byron’s pole was the first of his career and the 700th for Chevrolet. Hendrick Motorsports has now won the last five Daytona 500 poles, a record for consecutive poles.
