William Byron goes from the Xfinity Series to full time Cup Series driver in one year.
Byron, 20, will take over the wheel of the No. 24 Chevrolet for Hendrick Motorsports for the 2018 season after a wildly successful season at the Xfinity Series.
Last season Byron won four races on his way to a series championship adding 12 top-5’s and 22 top-10’s along the way. This came one year after notching seven wins in the Camping World Truck Series.
Byron takes over the No. 24 from Chase Elliott who will now drive the No. 9, a number which has importance to his family.
Axalta remains on the car and Liberty University continues it’s association with Byron for the 2018 season.
The Hendrick Motorsports team will be made up of younger drivers this season with the exception of seven-time champion Jimmie Johnson. In addition to Byron, Elliott and Johnson the team also has Alex Bowman taking over the seat of the No. 88.
