Matt Thornton still awaiting team with “serious” interest

Matt Thornton remains a free agent who as he is “waiting for a team to show serious interest.”

The 39-year-old left hander appeared on Sirius XM on Wednesday saying he would retire if he does not get a big league deal for the 2016 season.

Thornton surely has plenty of teams interested in him but thus far no one has paid up for the reliever who spent last season with the Nationals compiling a 2.18 ERA and a 23/11 K/BB ratio in 41 1/3 innings. Thornton was especially tough against left handed hitters holding them to a .198/.205/.279 line.

We fully believe Thornton will get a big league deal this season but at this point it is likely to be of the one-year variety. Given the amount of money players such as Tony Sipp (3 years/$18 million) have received this winter it is easy to understand why Thornton is frustrated with his market.
