Gary Kubiak hired to be new head coach of Broncos

Decades ago Gary Kubiak was the back-up quarterback to John Elway on the Broncos. Now he will be the head coach of the Broncos under general manager Elway.

Kubiak served as the offensive coordinator of the Ravens this season after previously serving as the head coach of the Texans.

The deal between the Broncos and Kubiak is said to be for four years with a formal announcement coming on Tuesday according to Mike Klis of the Denver Post.

The 53-year-old Kubiak was 61-64 during his eight seasons with the Texans winning the AFC South twice before poor quarterback from Matt Schaub play doomed them in 2013.

Broncos quarterback Peyton Manning is still deciding on his future. Manning opted out of the Pro Bowl earlier today but has not made any statements about his future.

“It’s a great honor to be selected to the Pro Bowl, and I’ve always taken the obligation to play in it very seriously,” Manning said. “I’ve believed that, if healthy, it’s a player’s responsibility to play in the game because of what it means to be voted in by your peers and the fans.

“I’m disappointed that I’m just not healthy enough this year to be part of it. It’s going to be tough not being down there with the other guys, but it hasn’t had enough time to heal.”

Previously Manning expressed interest in playing for Kubiak leading up to the 2012 season but the Texans opted to stick with Schaub.

Manning is set to earn $19 million if he were to return to the Broncos for the 2015 season. He dealt with a thigh injury to close out the season and was inefficient during the teams AFC Divisional round loss to the Colts.
