The San Diego Padres have added a pair of relief pitchers via minor league contracts.
Jose Valverde and Scott Elbert will both join the Padres this spring as they seek to earn a spot in the teams bullpen.
Valverde, 36, began last season as the closer of the New York Mets but things quickly fell apart as he had a 5.66 ERA, 1.65 WHIP and 23/10 K/BB ratio in 20 2/3 innings before earning his release. A former closer his days at the back-end of anyone’s bullpen are over.
The 29-year-old Elbert appeared in seven games for the Dodgers in 2014 posting a 2.08 ERA, 1.15 WHIP and a 2/1 K/BB ratio in 4 1/3 innings. He will be looking to crack the Padres opening day roster as a lefty out of the pen.
Athletics designate Andy Parrino for assignment
After acquiring both Ben Zobrist and Yunel Escobar from the Tampa Bay Rays on Saturday the Oakland Athletics have designated infielder Andy Parrino for assignment.
There is a good chance that Parrino passes though waivers unclaimed and returns to the A’s as minor league depth at Triple-A Sacramento.
In 21 games Parrino hit .152/.216/.283 with a home run and three RBI.
