With the New York Yankees failing to make the playoffs for the second straight season the career of Derek Jeter will come to an end on Sunday against the long-time rival Boston Red Sox.

Jeter was pinch hit for in the fifth inning of Saturday’s game at Fenway Park elicting a slue of boos from fans in what turned out to be a 10-4 loss for the Yankees.

Asked after the game if he would play Sunday, Jeter replied “yep.”

Manager Joe Girardi said that there were no concerns over the legs of Jeter even as cameras caught him limping. Jeter told Girardi that he wanted only two at-bats in Saturday’s game, a request that Girardi honored.

“I don’t think so,” Girardi said about Jeter’s legs. “I think he had to run extremely hard and he had to stretch. He probably felt it a little bit in his hamstring, but he didn’t say he was injured, but we’ll see.”

The Red Sox have planned a low-key celebration for the end of Jeter’s career.
