Starting in place of Tony Romo, Brandon Weeden put together a strong showing in Thursday nights preseason opener against the San Diego Chargers.

With the Cowboys cutting ties with Kyle Orton the former first round pick of the Cleveland Browns is now clearly the No. 2 guy on the depth chart at quarterback in Dallas.

For what its worth Weeden excelled in his first preseason game with the Cowboys completing 13-of-17 passes for 107 yards and a touchdown. Even more impressive was that the Cowboys offensive unit lacked stars Dez Bryant, Jason Witten and DeMarco Murray.

The Cowboys are prepared to go this season with Weeden as the backup to Romo. While he put together a strong showing on Thursday fans will be wanting to see him on clipboard duty.

Another player who shined for the Cowboys was running back Joseph Randle. Starting in place of Murray, Randle ran the ball 13 times for 50 yards.

The strong showing by Randle only lengthens his hold on the No. 3 running back job in Dallas ahead of former Arizona Cardinals second round pick Ryan Williams.
