A punch thrown to the face of a female basketball player has ended cornerback Nigel Bethel’s time at Texas Tech before it even began.
The freshman was the highest rated incoming player for the Red Raiders.
Bethel punched a female basketball player Amber Battle in the face during a pickup game on Saturday.
“Nigel Bethel II, a Texas Tech football student-‐athlete, has been dismissed from the team due to his role in an incident at the Texas Tech Student Recreation Center on Saturday, June 28. Texas Tech Athletics has a zero tolerance policy on this type of behavior,” assistant athletic director Blayne Beal said in a statement.
Battle will need surgery according to the Lubbock Avalanche-Journal:
Lady Raider star Amber Battle is expected to have surgery after she was hit in the face by Bethel at Texas Tech’s recreation center, the Avalanche-Journal has learned.
No word what led Bethel to punching Battle though it is worth mentioning that Battle led the Lady Raiders with 16.4 points per game and had a team high 7.4 rebounds. At 5-foot-9 she is the same height as Bethel.
