The New York Jets are going to have a rotation of running backs in their backfield this season in an effort to keep Chris Johnson fresh.
Johnson is not going to be a workhorse with the Jets, as the team believes it takes away from his home run ability.
“He’s got some miles on him,” Jets running backs coach Anthony Lynn told the Newark Star Ledger. “So we’re going to have to be strategic in how we use him, and when we use him, to keep him fresh so that he can be the explosive guy that I know that he can be.”
Signed by the Jets, Johnson joins a backfield that aw Chris Ivory and Bilal Powell split carries nearly evenly for a total of 1,530 yards.
Johnson may believe he can still be a 2,000 yard back like he was in 2009 but the Jets are not going to give him that chance. Though one area of the offense in which he may become especially useful is in the passing game where he has averaged just over 45 catches a season in his six year career.
