Kansas City Royals pitcher Luke Hochevar will undergo Tommy John surgery preventing him from pitching this season.
Hochevar, 30, was being given a chance to compete for a rotation spot this spring after making 58 appearances out of the bullpen last season posting a 1.92 ERA and a 0.82 WHIP.
Royals manager Ned Yost relayed the news on Friday about Hochevar who has a sprained ulnar collateral ligament. He will become a free agent at the end of the season.
Another player that the Royals will not have this season is Brad Penny.
Penny signed a minor league deal with the Royals but has been released after a brutal spring in which he allowed seven runs and 13 hits over four innings of work. Penny is trying to comeback after sitting out all of 2013.
