The Texas Rangers are going to give Colby Lewis a shot to occupy a spot in their rotation and after his first throwing session pitching coach Mike Maddux liked what he saw.

“That was like vintage Colby,” said Maddux who has overseen the Rangers pitchers since the 2009 season. “I can’t come up with enough good adjectives to talk about him.”

Lewis is hoping to return to the majors after being out since 2012. Six months ago he underwent hip resurfacing surgery. Prior to that Lewis had surgery on his right flexor tendon.

“I expect myself to go out there and perform at a big league level,” Lewis said. “I want to go out there and win a job. I don’t want to go out there and be overly patient and get put on the back burner and not looked at for a spot in this rotation. I’ll compete to win a job, plain and simple.”

Since returning from Japan for the 2008 season the now 34-year-old Lewis has compiled a 3.93 ERA and a 1.18 WHIP in 80 starts.
