The Baltimore Orioles and Matt Wieters avoided arbitration by agreeing to a one-year, $7.7 million contract on Thursday.

The deal is “just above” the mid-point of what both sides were discussing last month. Wieters will also have the chance to earn more money through awards.

Wieters, 27, an All Star catcher was arbitration-eligible for the second time this winter.  Last season he hit. 235/.287/.417 with 22 homers and 79 RBI.
