The Los Angeles Dodgers may be among the teams pursuing Japanese pitcher Masahiro Tanaka but that will not stop the club from signing two-time Cy Young winner Clayton Kershaw to an extension.
FOX Sports’ Ken Rosenthal reports that Kershaw and the Dodgers could agree to “a record-breaking deal this week.”
Kershaw and the Dodgers were said to be close to a seven-year extension worth $210 million in August before the Dodgers back out. Of course things will not get any cheaper for the Dodgers as Kershaw figures to ask for a record salary in arbitration this year.
Kershaw has lead the National League in ERA in each of the last three seasons posting a 1.83 ERA in 2013 while capturing his second Cy Young Award.
The record deal for a pitcher is Justin Verlander’s seven-year $180 million deal with the Tigers. It’s worth mentioning that Kershaw has the same agent as teammate Zack Greinke who landed a six-year deal worth $147 million.
