The New York Jets drafted Geno Smith in the second round and while the rookie quarterback has had more downs than ups the coaching staff is still behind him.

On Thursday offensive coordinator Marty Mornhinweg gave Smith a vote of confidence.

“I’m even more certain now than I was earlier that he could be a really good one,” Mornhinweg said, via New York Daily News.

Smith’s 21 interceptions this season have stalled out the Jets offense numerous times.

“Everybody progresses at a different rate at really all positions, but (in) particular the quarterback,” Mornhinweg said, though he also admitted, “I felt like we had to restart almost a few weeks back.”

The Jets may bring in another veteran this offseason but for now it appears that Smith is safe atop the depth chart unless a new coaching staff arrives.

“He’s got skill and ability. He’s a bright young man. . . He’s got instincts,” Mornhinweg said. “Now, from afar or if you’re not really in it, it’s probably hard to see the great progress. He’s certainly progressed.”
