The Internal Revenue Service says that NASCAR driver Juan Pablo Montoya owes $2.7 million in taxes and penalties.

Montoya had $9.5 million in taxable income in 2007 and 2008 but claimed only $2.4 million on his joint return with his wife according to the agency. In a previously unkonwn lawsuit filed in U.S. Tax Court, Montoya concedes that in those two years he had nearly $800,000 more in gross receipts but challenges the IRS’ claim of $9.5 million.

Next season Montoya will return to IndyCar with Penske Racing. He has two races left in NASCAR driving the No. 42 car of Earnhardt Ganassi Racing.

The IRS case against Montoya centers around actions undertook as he arrived in the U.S. to compete in NASCAR. For those interested in reading more about Montoya I suggest you check out the Forbes article.
