The Oakland Athletics were a game away from going to the American League Championship Series but fell short.

To make matters a little more painful Sonny Gray, who pitched Game 5 for the Athletics, suffered a broken thumb on his non throwing hand reports CSN Bay Area.

An x-ray after the game confirmed the break which happened when Gray fielded a comebacker off the bat of Prince Fielder in the fifth inning. The injury was to Gray’s non-throwing hand and the offseason should give the 23-year-old ample time to heal.

Gray was charged with three runs over five-plus innings in the 3-0 loss to the Detroit Tigers. He recorded three strikeouts and walked four batters. After allowing two singles to open the sixth inning he was removed from the game.
