Dario Franchitti breaks back following crash at Grand Prix of Houston (Video)

IZOD IndyCar Series driver Dario Franchitti broke two vertebrae, fractured his right ankle and suffered a concussion on Sunday’s running of the Grand Prix of Houston.

Franchitti will not require any spinal surgery following a crash that occurred when he made contact with Takuma Sato and E.J. Viso on the final lap of the second race at Houston.

The four time series champion and three-time winner of the Indianapolis 500 is currently eighth in the IndyCar standings heading to the final race of the season at Auto Club Speedway in Fontana, CA.

Sato and Viso were evaluated on the scene and released. There were 13 spectators injured during the incident. No details have been released about their conditions yet.
