New York Jets quarterback Mark Sanchez is likely headed to season ending surgery.

Sanchez was injured late in the third preseason game and later the team named second-round draft pick Geno Smith as the starter.

ESPN’s Chris Mortensen reports that Sanchez is “likely to have surgery” that would end his 2013 season after Dr. James Andrews confirmed Wednesday he has a labral tear in his right shoulder.

Sanchez could opt to rehab his shoulder and try to play at some point this season but he would likely require surgery at some point. With the Jets expected to cut Sanchez at the end of the season the quarterback may choose to go ahead and get the surgery out of the way.

A decision is expected to be made by the fifth-year player by the end of this week.
