Scott Baker to make Cubs debut on Sunday

MLB: Spring Training-Chicago Cubs at Oakland Athletics

Scott Baker will make his debut for the Chicago Cubs on Sunday against the Milwaukee Brewers.

Baker, 31, signed a $5.5 million deal prior to the 2013 season but has not pitched at the big league level yet. Baker Tommy John surgery on his elbow last season but the Cubs were hopeful he would be ready to contribute when the season started.

Instead Baker had a series of set backs before beginning a minor league rehab assignment in July. That assignment has not went as well as the Cubs or Baker had hoped as the right hander compiled a 5.46 ERA over 29 2/3 innings of work.

Still the Cubs are calling Baker up, if for no other reason then to see how he fares at the big league level. Travis Wood’s next start has been pushed back a day to Monday.

Baker spent seven seasons with Minnesota (2005-2011) going 63-48 with a 4.15 ERA and a 1.26 WHIP.
