The New England Patriots have released Tim Tebow.

Tebow was one of the last cuts as the Patriots get their roster down to 53 for the start of the season.

Signed in the off-season the Patriots only asked Tebow to serve as the third quarterback on the depth chart. Tebow, 26, did not start a game last season for the New York Jets and his biggest contributions came in punt protection.

Tebow was a Heisman winning quarterback at the University of Florida in 2007. At Florida the quarterback was part of two National Championship winning teams.

Denver, under current Patriots offensive coordinator Josh McDaniels, drafted Tebow in the first round of the 2010 Draft. He would lead the team to the Playoffs, and win a game in the opening round, but was traded to the Jets in the following off-season.

Thursday, in the Patriots final preseason game, Tebow was 6-for-11 with two touchdowns and an interception.

Had New England kept Tebow on their roster it would have marked the first time in four years that the Patriots carried more then two quarterbacks on their roster.

In three seasons Tebow has completed 47.9 percent of his passes and has 17 touchdowns, nine interceptions and a 75.3 quarterback rating.
