Colorado Rockies reliever Rafael Betancourt has been diagnosed with a torn ulnar collateral ligament in his right elbow.
The news is particularly disappointing for Betancourt who had a $4.25 million mutual option for the 2014 season. Now the 38-year-old may be forced into retirement.
Betancourt will be given a PRP injection and be re-evaluated in hopes that Tommy John surgery can be avoided.
In 32 games this season Betancourt was 2-5 with 16 saves, a 4.08 ERA and a 1..29 WHIP in 28 2/3 innings of work.
