The Chicago Cubs relied on both the arm and bat of Travis Wood to win Sunday’s game against the San Francisco Giants.
Wood, 26, was selected to the National League All-Star team this season as a pitcher but against the Giants he reminded everyone that he is not a liability with the bat either.
In seven innings of work on the mound Wood allowed one unearned run on four hits while striking out seven and walking four. He also played offensive star going 2-for-3 at the plate with a solo home run off of Tim Lincecum in the fifth.
With the win Wood improves to 7-7 with a 2.79 ERA and a 1.07 WHIP. At the plate he is hitting .293/.326/.537 with three home runs.
Wood’s next start will come against the Los Angeles Dodgers.
