The Chicago Cubs have designated Carlos Marmol for assignment released infielder Ian Stewart.
Neither move is surprising as both players struggled to perform.
Marmol had experienced multiple meltdowns this season and owns a 5.86 ERA and a 1.70 WHIP. He is still owed about half of his $9.8 salary for the season which should keep anyone away from claiming him on waivers.
Nearly two weeks ago Stewart was suspended for negative comments about his status with the Cubs. Stewart is currently owed around $1 million in salary for the rest of the season.
Stewart did not appear with the Cubs this season and was hitting just .168.286/.372 while with Trip-A Iowa. A former first round pick of Colorado, Stewart has done little since 2010.
Over Stewarts last two seasons in the majors he hit just .183/.272/.289 with five home runs and 23 RBI in 103 games for the Rockies and Cubs.
