The St. Louis Cardinals have agreed on a five-year extension with starting pitcher Adam Wainwright. Set to be a free agent at the end of the season the ace pitcher and team had set a deadline of Opening Day to work out a new deal.
Wainwright’s new deal will pay him $97.5 million over the next five seasons.
In his first year back from Tommy John surgery the now 31-year-old hardly skipped a beat recording a 3.94 ERA in 198 2/3 innings while striking out 184.
Wainwright will be expected to improve on those numbers in his second year back from surgery and with the loss of Chris Carpenter for the season.
