Indians release Daisuke Matsuzaka

The Cleveland Indians have released right-handed pitcher Daisuke Matsuzaka. By releasing Matsuzaka the Indians can avoid paying him a $100,000 bonus.

Matsuzaka was reunited with former Red Sox manager Terry Francona in Cleveland but dealt with cramping in his right calf. He was told last week that he would not make the Indians opening day roster.

The Indians and Matsuzaka are expected to renegotiate a deal soon which will allow the pitcher to report to Triple-A Columbus. Matsuzaka would have earned $1.5 million if he had made the Indians roster out of spring training.

In eight innings of work this spring Matsuzaka had a 2.25 ERA. He was reportably throwing in the upper-80s during his outings this spring.
