Wang pitches six scoreless in WBC opener, Yankees scouted

The World Baseball Classic has started and so too has the spring of Chien-Ming Wang. Wang pitched six scoreless innings as Chinese Taipei beat Australia 4-1 in the WBC opener.

Wang allowed four hits in the contest and struck out two but managed to stay under the 65-pitch limit for the classics opening round.

While Wang’s numbers look good on paper there should be concern with the velocity he displayed. Reports say that Wang topped out at 82-83 mph on the stadiums radar gun. Wang averaged 91 mph last season when he was a member of the Washington Nationals.

The New York Yankees were one team that watched Wang on Friday night. Wang could be an option for the Yankees with Phil Hughes dealing with a back injury. He was a member of the team from 2005-2009 recording back-to-back 19 win seasons in 2006 and 2007.
